A fourth place finish by Top Drop at the Up and Coming Stakes convinced trainer Gerald Ryan that his horse is ready to compete at the $1 million, Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes. The plans that Ryan have for the highly touted Hinchinbrook were put to waste when the colt missed the Starlight Stakes because of an elevated temperature.
Now, Hinchinbrook will compete against older horses in the 1100-metre Concorde Stakes on Saturday while Top Drop will compete at the first Group One race of the Australian horse racing season that will be held at the Rosehill racecourse. Ryan said that Top Drop is a handy horse but a level below the best two-year-old race horses. Now, the horse has gained bulk though is not solid enough yet.
Ryan also said that all of the jockeys that have ridden Top Drop said that he needs a race between 1400 metres and 1600 metres. Also, Top Drop will be running at his home track and he can compete very well if the track condition coming into the race is fair and his barrier draw is solid.
Top Drop had a black-and-white run at the 1200-metre Up and Coming Stakes last Saturday which was won by Blackball at the Warwick Farm racecourse. He was held up during the early part and late in the race but he still managed to finish 2 ¼ lengths behind the winner.
For the 2010 Golden Rose Stakes, the David Payne-trained Masquerader and Victorian Toorak Toff carried identical 4.60 betting odds. Both of them are ahead of the unbeaten Squamosa that has won his three career starts under wet conditions. Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily’s participation in the Golden Rose Stakes is not yet final for she might compete in a race at Caulfield. She has an 8.00 betting odd.
Panpique, the race horse that upset Crystal Lily in the Quezette Stakes, has a 13.00 betting odds and he is just slightly ahead of Blackball which has a 14.00 betting odd and the Golden Slipper runner-up Decision Time with a 17.00 betting odd.
Decision Time was the pre-race favourite coming into the Up and Coming Stakes but he finished fifth to Blackball after running on the inside. Meanwhile, Top Drop was running on the outside during the said race. Ryan is now looking for a jockey since Tim Clark, Top Drop’s jockey for the Up and Coming Stakes, has given his commitment to another race.
