Being the longest of the four international Hong Kong horse races, the Hong Kong Vase is ran over 2,400 metres of the Sha Tin turf Racecourse. This Group 1 flat horse stage was first staged in 1994 and since then, it has been held every mid-December. It currently has a prize purse of HK$14,000,000 or estimately US$1.8 million.
This race is open to thoroughbreds three years old and above. Three-year-olds should weigh 121 lbs. while horses aged four and above must weigh 126 lbs. A four pound allowance is permitted to fillies and mares. It also is one of the four Hong Kong International Races together with the Hong Kong Cup, the Hong Kong Sprint and the Hong Kong Mile. It was elevated to Group 1 status in 2000.
Of the race’s first 15 editions, 13 have been won by horses trained in Great Britain and France. Out of this number, horses Luso and Doctor Dino have both won two races apiece. Meanwhile, Olivier Peslier is the most successful jockey in the Hong Kong Vase for he won four of these races. Peslier won in 1995, 1999, 2007 and 2008.
As for trainers, Elie Lellouche, Richard Gibson and Clive Brittain have won two Hong Kong Vase races apiece. Lellouche won in 1995 and 2003 while Brittain gained victory in 1996 and 1997. Gibson won in 2007 and 2008. As for owners Saeed Manana and Javier Martinez Salmean have both won two each. Manana won in 1996 and 1997 while Salmean claimed victory in 2007 and 2008.
