Inaugurated in 1999, the Hong Kong Sprint is a Group 1 flat horse race for thoroughbreds aged three and above. Being one of the most awaited races in Hong Kong, this race is played out annually in mid-December for 1,200 metres or six furlongs at the Sha Tin Racecourse.
For this Cathay Pacific-sponsored race, participating horses must be 126 lbs. with an allowance of 4 lbs. for fillies and mares. Also, fourteen horses will participate in this year’s competition. The billing proves to be Hong Kong vs. the world as the best sprinters from America, Europe, Australia and Japan will try to end Hong Kong’s seven-year dominance at this race.
Leading the pack of competitors is 2007 Hong Kong Sprint winner Sacred Kingdom. Its toughest competitor might be Australia’s Horse of the Year Scenic Blast and eight-time Australia Group 1 winner Apache Cat. Not to be left out are America’s top turf sprinter California Flag and Japan’s best sprinter Laurel Guerreiro.

Now, the Hong Kong Sprint Cup is the last leg of the Global Sprint Challenge series and it is staged after The Age Classic.
