From its namesake, the Hong Kong Mile is run at the Sha Tin Racecourse for a distance of 1,600 metres or exactly one mile. It is one of the four international Hong Kong horse races and it is staged by mid-December.
Originally called the Hong Kong International Bowl, this race was inaugurated in 1991 with its initial distance pegged at 1,400 metres and was won by Additional Risk with jockey Michael Kinane. The 1992 edition of the Hong Kong Mile was postponed until April 1993 due to a spreading equine virus.
Since then, the race has been staged in its mid-December schedule but its current title and race distance were introduced in 1999. A year later, the race was elevated to Group 1 status. At present, this race has a prize purse of HK$16,000,000 or around US$2 million.
Only thoroughbreds that are aged three years old and up are allowed to join in this right-handed turf race. Three-year-old horses must weigh 125 lbs. while horses aged four and up should be at 126 lbs. A four-pound allowance is allowed for mares and fillies.
In 2009, Good Ba Ba completed a three-peat of the Hong Kong Mile with a time of 1:34.60. Because of which, owner John Yuen Se Kit and jockey Oliver Doleuze also won their third Hong Kong Mile with Doleuze getting his first Hong Kong Mile victory while riding The Duke. Good Ba Ba’s 2009 victory is also the first Hong Kong Mile triumph for trainer Derek Cruz.
Due to its high stakes, this race is one of the main events in the Hong Kong horse race betting calendar. This race does not only attract local Hong Kong horse racing fans but international horse racing bettors as well.
