The Hong Kong Cup is the richest 2000-metre turf race in the world and it has total prize money of HK$18,000,000 or $2,300,000. This Group 1 flat horse race is open to race horses aged three and up and it is staged annually on mid-December at the Sha Tin racecourse. It also is the final leg of the World Series Racing Championship and the first Hong Kong race to be included in the championship series.
This turf race is staged right-handed and three-year-old horses can only have a set weight of 123 pounds while horses aged four and up must have a weight of 126 pounds. Fillies and mares are given a four-pound allowance.
The Hong Kong Cup was first staged on the 24th of January, 1988 and its original distance is 1,800 metres. During this inaugural staging, only horses that were trained in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore can compete. The year after, race horses from Australia and New Zealand were allowed to join. In 1989, the Hong Kong Cup was staged twice to facilitate the race’s transfer to December.
In 1990, European-trained horses were admitted while those from the United States were admitted in 1991. Race horses from Canada and Japan were allowed to compete for the Hong Kong Cup in 1992. In 1999, its present distance of 2000 metres was set and the race was promoted to Group 1 status. The Hong Kong Cup is also one of the four Hong Kong International Races together with the Hong Kong Vase, the Hong Kong Mile and the Hong Kong Sprint.
The winning speed record under the Hong Kong Cup’s current distance was set by Falbray in 2003 when he won with the time of 2:00.90. No horse has won this race more than once but jockey Frankie Dettori has three Hong Kong Cup victories under his belt when he won in 2000, 2003 and 2007. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor and owner Godolphin Racing has the two victories which both occurred in 2000 and 2007.
