The 2011 Stradbroke Handicap marks the 108^th anniversary of this 1400-metre open handicap sprint race and this year’s edition will fall on the 11^th of June at the Eagle Farm Racecourse. The Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap has a prize purse of $1 million and best lead-up races are the Doomben 10,000 and the QTC Cup. Sprinters and mile-long distance gallopers have the advantage on this race.

Also, the lighter horses have the upper hand and barrier draws are a non-factor due to the speed of the competing thoroughbreds. Aside from its namesake, the Stradbroke Handicap day also features Group 1 races like the TJ Smith Stakes and the Queensland Derby and Group 2 races such as the Brisbane Cup and the Queensland Guineas.

The TJ Smith Stakes is a 1600-metre set weights race for two-year-old horses with a $500,000 prize pool while the Queensland Derby is a 2400-metre set weights race for three-year-old horses with an identical $500,000 prize pool. The Brisbane Cup is a 2400-metre open handicap race with a $300,000 prize purse while the Queensland Guineas is a 1600-metre set weights race for three year old horses with a prize purse of $250,000.

Because the Stradbroke Handicap has a short distance, speed matters in order to score a victory. However, doing so is challenging for the other competing thoroughbreds and their jockeys have the capability to put boosters on their strides.

This short race has an average finish time of a little more than a minute but punters take time to decide on their bets due to the high quality of participants. The excitement that the Stradbroke Handicap brings makes it one of the most awaited sprint races of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
