After Stanzout won for the first time over 1000 metres at Moonee Valley, trainer Colin Davies is gunning for a run at the Manikato Stakes for his stable star. The 1200-metre Manikato Stakes will run on the 24th of September and Davies was thrilled with the victory of the eight-year-old race horse in his fifth try.
With a 4.80 betting odd at the $100,000 RDC Australasian Flooring Plate, Stanzout was placed by jockey Craig Williams at the back of race leader Morgan Dollar in the run. He then came off the fence to pull away from Morgan Dollar to win by 1 ¼ lengths. Morgan Dollar finished second with a half-head advantage over Keano.
Davies proudly told that he has the multiple Group One place finisher back to his form two to three years ago. He added that a lot of work brought Stanzout back to his old form and Davies guaranteed that there is still a lot of race left in him. Davies also certified about his goal of having Stanzout race at the Manikato Stakes to see if he can handle the Mooney Valley racecourse the same way he did.
After Stanzout won the Group Two Gilgai Stakes in 2007, the race horse’s main drawback health-wise is the lung infection that he contracted and the polyps in his windpipe. He also had a torn hip muscle and a broken wither.
Despite the 1000-metre race distance, Davies is confident that Stanzout will win on Saturday. In July, he finished a half length behind winner and Cox Plate favourite Shoot Out in the Group Three, 1200-metre Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield. Davies also added that the run at the Manikato Stakes is highly possible given the recent sectional times of Stanzout in his last two starts.
Davies also said that Stanzout can compete at the 1200-metre, Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality at Flemington on the 4th of September but doing so might take some energy out of his race horse for the major races such as the Manikato Stakes.
