Up and coming Australian race horse Response will try to pull off an upset and defeat race favourite Doubtful Jack at the 1400-metre Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at the Caulfield Racecourse. At present, the female race horse has the second-best betting odd behind Doubtful Jack.
As part of her preparation for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, the mare scored an impressive runner-up finish to No Evidence Needed at the 1400-metre, Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes at the Flemington Racecourse during the first week of September. Certainly, the efforts of co-trainers Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra are starting to bear fruit.
During the Let’s Elope Stakes, Zahra said that Response’s ability to accelerate was a point of concern before the race. However, their doubts were erased after the race. For the 2010 Rupert Clarke Stakes, she is poised to give the four-year-old Doubtful Jack a tough challenge. Ellerton and Zahra are well aware that Doubtful Jack has a four-race winning streak with a cumulative margin of 20 lenghts.
Despite the imposing feat by Doubtful Jack, Response’s camp is positive that they can pull off the victory. Zahra also mentioned that his horse will start from the fifth barrier and they will be right at the action once the barrier gates open.
Aside from the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, the Ellerton-Zahra partnership will take effect with four more race horses. Two of their horses, Amaethon and Okay Oky, will take part in the 1200-metre Listed Pin and Win For Epilepsy Stakes. Zahra mentioned that Amaethon’s run has significantly improved after a lengthy break.
On the other hand, mares Red Flair and Casual Friday will compete in the 1200-metre Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint. However, Red Flair will start from the outermost barrier draw and she will need extra effort and luck to pull off a victory. On the other hand, Casual Friday recently won the $100,000 Carlyon Handicap at the Moonee Valley racecourse.
Casual Friday’s four-month break helped the mare improve her run and form and Zahra added that she is now a more matured race horse. Their stable hopes to give her a run at the Group races in the coming racing carnivals.
