While his counterpart and close competitor Douglas Whyte was serving a two-raceday suspension for careless riding, jockey Brett Prebble won two races on the same night. The former was when he and his horse Sapelli interfered with the latter who was riding Yue Lu Treasure.

Hong kong racingBecause of the two wins, Prebble’s lead over Whyte in the Premiereship is now seven points. Meanwhile, Whyte was also fined HK$80,000 instead of a suspension of two more racedays. The two-raceday suspension would have started after the May 30 Champions and Chater Cup.

Trainer Caspar Fownes said that Prebble and Mark Up will not make the same mistake for holding up badly on the turn. Fownes also said that having a little time between races helped with the pacing. Fownes also praised Prebble for holding the race horse during the middle part of the race and then pulling off at the home stretch.

Due to that superb run, Hold Up garnered his fourth victory of the season. Meanwhile, Prebble won the Jockey Challenge from Brett Doyle who also won two races for trainer Andy Leung Ting-wah by steering The Witch’s Broom and Daily Double to victory.

Doyle said that Daily Double has improved significantly for he did not think that the horse can handle the wet weather conditions of the turf. Due to this impressive performance, Doyle commented that Daily Double has shown his versatility for the horse was regarded before as a better dirt horse.

Doyle also commended Daily Double for his fighting spirit during the training sessions with Leung Ting-wah. Meanwhile, Doyle also said that a victory for The Witch’s Broom has been in the making for quite some time. Now that the victory is in the books, Doyle has nothing but praise for the horse.

Meanwhile, a late collision on the sixth race prompted a steward’s inquiry which helped Happy Tumbler and Gilded Flight who bagged first and second place respectively. The collision was caused by Royal Knight who is being steered by Olivier Doleuze. The inquiry found out that Royal Knight crossed the running line of another horse.

Because of the incident, Doleuze was later given a two-race day suspension and a HK$30,000 fine. However, he would soon get a double black eye after getting the same penalty on his performance on the third race wherein he is also tagged for careless riding after finishing second to trainer John Moore’s First In Command.

Moore described this victory as a tough one for his horse was able to take control from the wide gate. Also, Moore knew that his horse would love the soft conditions of the rain-soaked ground and he also predicted another win for the horse before the season ends.

In other news, Soviet Pearl which is trained by Paul O’Sullivan took advantage of the soft turf to win the Happy Valley Vase to increase his win total this season to four. After the track was declared good at 3pm, the condition of Happy Valley was switched to yielding after 92mm of rain fell on the racecourse before the sixth race. 28 out of the 92 mm of rainfall went in between the third and fourth race.
