Though Precedence got a 1.5-kilogram penalty by winning the Group 3 JRA Cup at the Moonee Valley racecourse, there is still a chance that he might not compete at the Caulfield Cup. Aside from the penalty for the Caulfield Cup, Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter also gave a 1.5-kilogram Melbourne Cup penalty to Precedence, bringing his weight for both races to 52 kilograms.

Hong kong racingDespite his recent victory, the Bart Cummings-trained race horse is in danger of not competing at the Caulfield Cup though he has an equal 7.50 Caulfield Cup betting odd with co-favourite and stablemate Dariana. Precedence is currently 37th in the Caulfield Cup order of entry and 47th in the Melbourne Cup.

Precedence’s chance came in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes last Sunday but he did not participate in the race. The winner of the Turnbull Stakes is automatically given a slot at the Caulfield Cup. Due to Precedence’s absence in the Turnbull Stakes, he has to win one of three races during Caulfield Guineas Day to gain automatic entry for the Caulfield Cup.

Precedence can claim victory in the 1600-metre, Group 1 Toorak Handicap and the 2000-metre, Group 1 Yalumba Stakes to qualify outright for the Caulfield Cup. He also has the option to win the 2400-metre, Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes in order to enter the Caulfield Cup final field.

Prior to Precedence, 2005 JRA Cup winner El Segundo was the last winner that got a 1.5-kilogram Caulfield Cup penalty. Maldivian, the 2007 JRA Cup winner, and 2009 winner Alcopop both got one-kilogram penalties. Carpenter commented that a 1.5-kilogram penalty for a race horse shows that a race horse is that dominant even against a stellar list of competitors.

The 1.5-kilogram penalty to Precedence will put him in the same weight class with Linton and Above Average in the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup. Meanwhile, Alcopop is slightly heavier at 52.5 kilograms.

Meanwhile, Carpenter did not place Melbourne Cup penalties for Colin Stephen Quality winner No Wine No Song and Ansett Classic winner Cedarberg for both races did not have the same quality of opposition that the JRA Cup has. The 53-kilogram No Wine No Song is 40th in the order of entry while Cedarberg jumped from 139th to 72nd after his victory that took him beyond the first ballot clause.

In other news, 1600-metre, Group 1 George Main Stakes place finishers Empire’s Choice and Trusting have satisfied the first Caulfield Cup elimination clause. Both race horses finished behind the mare More Joyous at the George Main Stakes. Trusting is now 29th in the Caulfield Cup order of entry while Empire’s Choice is at the 40th spot.
